Roman numeration system uses only seven basic symbols i.e., I, V, X, L, C, D and M

Rules for writing Roman Numerals
1) If a symbol is written after one of the greater value, add its value to the greater value.
2) If a symbol is written before one of the greater value, subtract its value from the greater value.
3) The letters can be repeated up to a maximum of three times only.
 
Points to remember
-> V is never subtracted.
-> I can be subtracted from V and X only.
-> V, L and D are never repeated.
 
Examples
1) 46 = 40 + 6 = XL + VI =XLVI
2) 75 = 70 + 5 = LXX + V = LXXV
3) 199 = 100 + 90 + 9 = C + XC + IX =CXCIX
4) CCXLIX = CC + XL + IX = 200 + 40 + 9 = 249
5) LXVI = L + X + VI = 50 + 10 + 6 = 66
6) LXXXII = L + X + VI = 50 + 10 + 6 = 66
